Read this before you read the number

These are May 2025 figures, so roughly fifteen months old.

BLS groups jobs into broad occupations, so your actual role may be narrower than the category.

Base wages only, no bonus and no equity.

In 212 of the 69,748 job-and-city combinations here, all of them very high-paying, BLS reports a wage only as "at or above $239,200" instead of a real figure, and this page shows that rather than guessing.

What to do with this

Already in the job

The band you sit in was set by your level, not your performance. So the conversation that moves your number is about the level, not the salary. Ask what level your role sits at, and what it takes to sit at the next one. That question gets a real answer far more often than a request for more money does.

About to get an offer

This is the only window where the whole band is open to you. Once you accept, every increase afterwards is a percentage of the number you agreed to. So do not be the first to name a figure. Ask what the range is for the level. If they press you, give a range, not a number.

High in the band

Being near the top is information, not a compliment. It means the room above you is small, and the next real increase is unlikely to come from where you are standing. That is worth knowing two years before you need it rather than the week you start looking.
